The Amazon pink river dolphin, also called the boto or bufeo, lives in freshwater rivers across Ecuador. Unlike many dolphins, they usually swim alone or in small groups. They are born bluish-gray and gradually turn pink as they mature, especially males. Males often become pinker due to scar tissue from fights, and their bright color helps attract females during mating season. Males try to impress females by biting and waving objects like branches or turtles, sometimes spinning and slapping the water. Pink river dolphins have distinctive features like  long snouts, round foreheads, flexible necks that allow them to turn their heads 180 degrees, and strong flippers for agile swimming. They can even swim backward and upside-down. They are the only dolphins with molar-like teeth, which help them chew a varied diet of fish, crustaceans, and turtles. According to Amazonian legend, they can transform into humans at night to seek love in villages. In reality, they are intelligent and curious animals that sometimes interact playfully with humans. However, their populations are hard to measure and have declined in some areas, partly because they are used as fish bait. Conservation efforts are currently underway to protect them and their habitat. Overall pink dolphins are an endangered, beautiful and unique species.
